Dr Christensen has a significant interest in research and has had her work published in a number of journals. Her current research is in pregnancy and IBD, mucosal healing and drug level monitoring in IBD, and intestinal ultrasound in IBD. Dr Christensen has also authored several chapters in IBD textbooks and is a reviewer for a top gastroenterology journal.

Dr Christensen founded the IBD Pregnancy Clinic at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and continues to be a part of the multidisciplinary team. She is also involved in multiple clinical trials and supervises a number of PhD and master's students. In addition, Dr Christensen is a scientific board member for the International Bowel Ultrasound Group.

Dr Christensen lives in Melbourne with her husband and two young children and whilst away from work, she enjoys spending time with her family, travelling, and reading.
