About
Professor Malhotra graduated from the University of Cambridge (Emmanuel College) in 2006, during which time he spent part of his academic training at MIT and Harvard University in the United States. He completed his early clinical training at Cambridge and Papworth before moving to Oxford for his specialist cardiology training. He was awarded a distinction for his MSc in Medical Leadership from the Royal College of Physicians in 2013 and completed a PhD in inherited heart diseases and sports cardiology at St George’s University of London. Following this, he was appointed as a NIHR Clinical Lecturer and later as a Consultant Cardiologist.
Highly active in both clinical care and research, Professor Malhotra leads the cardiology services for several elite sports organisations, including Manchester City, Leeds United, and Burnley Football Clubs, as well as British Cycling. He also works closely with Manchester United and is involved in the cardiac care of athletes representing Team GB, the English Institute of Sport (EIS), and multiple professional football, rugby, and cricket teams. His expertise is regularly sought for the medical set-up of major public events, including serving as Medical Director for the World Triathlon Championships and supporting the London Marathon.
Professor Malhotra’s research focuses on the adaptations of the athlete’s heart, inherited cardiac conditions, cardiomyopathies, myocarditis, and sudden arrhythmic death syndrome. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications, contributed to books in cardiology and medicine, and has been recognised with multiple Young Investigator Awards and Best Abstract prizes at international conferences such as ESC, ACC, and EACP. His studies have been published in leading journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
In addition to his clinical and research achievements, Professor Malhotra is committed to medical education. He has served as an examiner and tutor for the Royal College of Physicians for MRCP Part 2 examinations and was a Module Lead and Admissions Tutor for the MSc in Sports Cardiology at St George’s University of London. He currently leads the development of a research and clinical network for athlete’s heart care across the North West of England.
“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
