Dr. Albena Dardzhikova is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a special interest in clinical and surgical glaucoma, currently serving as the Glaucoma Lead at East Kent University Hospital NHS Trust. Dr. Dardzhikova obtained her medical degree from the Medical Academy of Sofia, Bulgaria in 1989 and completed her Ophthalmology training at the same institution in 1996.
Following her training, she worked for seven years at a Military Hospital in Kuwait before moving to Canada, where she undertook a four-year Advanced Refractive Surgery and Research Fellowship at the Gimbel Eye Centre in Calgary under Professor Howard Gimbel. She then completed a one-year Glaucoma Fellowship at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, under the supervision of Professor Mikelberg.
In 2011, Dr. Dardzhikova relocated to England, working as a Glaucoma Fellow for three years with Professor Ansari, followed by an additional year of Glaucoma and Cataract Fellowship at the University of Bristol under Professor Sparrow. In 2018, she began her role as a substantive Glaucoma Consultant with East Kent NHS Trust, where she holds Glaucoma and Glaucoma Laser clinics at several locations including Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, the Kent and Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury, Buckland Hospital in Dover, and William Harvey Hospital in Ashford. She also covers an urgent eye clinic weekly and conducts regular Glaucoma/Cataract Theatre sessions.
Dr. Dardzhikova has a special interest in managing all types of glaucoma—ranging from complex glaucoma, primary open angle glaucoma, secondary glaucoma (including uveitis and neovascular types), to angle closure glaucoma. Her expertise extends to glaucoma surgery, trabeculectomy, glaucoma revision surgery, laser treatments (including YAG laser iridotomy and capsulotomy), and cataract surgery, making her a leading authority in general ophthalmology and specialised glaucoma care.
