Mr Shankarappa is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma surgeon specialising in lower limb issues in adults. His philosophy is based, wherever possible, on trying to maintain the patients natural joints and tissues through repair and reconstruction.
Following his training and specialisation, Mr Shankarappa worked up to the level of Professor of Orthopaedics in a prestigious Medical College in Bangalore, India. He then received further training in the UK, Germany and Canada and completed advanced Trauma and Orthopaedic Fellowships. Mr Shankarappa was also awarded the Khazenifar Gold Medal for the Best Performance in the M.Ch.Ortho., Liverpool Exam.
Mr Shankarappa performs Hip and Knee replacements, including unicondylar knee replacements. He performs knee arthroscopic surgery and repair of meniscal tears to preserve the patients own meniscal cartilage tissue. He also performs knee arthroscopy and chondroplasty for damaged cartilage surfaces with cartilage surface debridement, and chondral(cartilage) grafting.
He regularly performs Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction for ACL injury, and realignment of the arthritic knee in younger patients, to preserve the natural knee joint (Tibial Osteotomy).
In some patients with an arthritic knee, he will assess them for suitability for the use of specialised knee offloading braces, which will allow continued function with the relief of symptoms, often avoiding the need for surgery.
He emphasises the importance of exercise and rehabilitation in helping recovery from injury, arthritis and after surgery.
