About Dr Dr Sonia Moorthy
Dr. Sonia Moorthy is a Consultant Ophthalmologist with extensive experience in treating complex cataract, strabismus (squint), and a range of paediatric eye diseases, including inherited disorders and myopia. Her expertise also covers Laser Vision Correction, complicated strabismus resulting from thyroid eye disease, congenital or acquired cranial nerve disorders, inherited ocular motility disorders, and the use of botulinum toxin for managing strabismus in both adults and children. Dr. Moorthy completed her medical degree at the University of Dundee in Scotland. She pursued a Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Melbourne. During her studies, she volunteered as a field researcher in the Pilbara, Western Australia, as part of the National Indigenous Eye Survey. Her ophthalmic training was completed at the Sydney Eye Hospital, and she further enhanced her skills by undertaking two fellowships in paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at the Singapore National Eye Centre and the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, UK. Dr. Upon her return to Australia, Dr. Moorthy provided adult, paediatric, and indigenous eye care in Far North Queensland, serving communities up to Cape York. Dr. Moorthy moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2021 and established a primary practice in Buderim in 2022, with a satellite site in Gympie in 2023. Dr. Moorthy has recently completed a Diploma in Refractive Surgery with Prof. Jorge Alio, having undergone practical and theoretical laser refractive training with Prof. Sri Ganesh and Prof. Dan Reinstein, global leaders and innovators in laser vision correction. Dr. Moorthy strongly believes in merging leading technological innovation with personalised, evidence-based ophthalmic care. She is also committed to training the next generation of ophthalmologists and sits on the RANZCO Ophthalmic Sciences Board of Examiners, the RANZCO Women in Ophthalmology committee group, and the RANZCO Central Trainee Selection Committee. Moorthy is deeply committed to ongoing research, providing excellent eye care to the local community, and teaching to build the capacity of fellow ophthalmologists in developing Asia Pacific nations.
