About Mr Shivakumar Shankar
Mr Shivakumar Shankar is a fellowship-trained Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon with extensive experience in hip and knee surgery, practising privately at Nuffield Health Brentwood Hospital and Spire Hartswood Hospital. He also holds an NHS post at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, based across Queen’s Hospital in Romford and King George Hospital in Goodmayes. Mr Shankar has a specialist interest in computer and robotic navigation-assisted hip and knee arthroplasty, and was the first surgeon to perform computer-assisted total hip replacement in the Essex and North East London region. He regularly performs robotic-assisted total hip and knee replacements, partial knee replacements, knee arthroscopy, cartilage reconstruction, meniscal repair, and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections. To date, he has been involved in over 3,000 elective and trauma procedures, including more than 1,000 hip and knee replacements and over 500 knee arthroscopies. His training includes the prestigious Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) rotation in London, with placements at leading institutions such as RNOH Stanmore, the Royal London Hospital, and Great Ormond Street Hospital. He undertook specialist fellowships at RNOH Stanmore and the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Glasgow, focusing on lower limb arthroplasty and navigation-assisted surgery. He further enhanced his expertise during a travelling fellowship in Germany with Professor Wagner’s team in Rummelsberg, gaining experience in anterior approach hip arthroplasty. Mr Shankar contributes actively to medical education and is a faculty member on multiple national training courses in trauma and orthopaedic surgery. He is the infection lead and clinical audit lead for the Department of Trauma and Orthopaedics at his NHS Trust and regularly supervises clinical audit activities. He is also involved in research and has presented his work internationally. His publication on computer-assisted navigation in hip and knee arthroplasty has contributed to the evidence base for technology-assisted joint replacement surgery. Mr Shankar is a member of the General Medical Council, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the British Orthopaedic Association, and the Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery (CAOS UK) group. His work is recognised by a number of private medical insurers. His clinical interests include hip and knee arthroplasty, revision hip surgery, joint preservation, soft tissue injuries, osteoarthritis management, and medico-legal reporting.
