About

Mr Stephen Mannion is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a broad practice in general orthopaedics and a specialist focus on lower limb arthroplasty and knee arthroscopy. He is based at Spire Fylde Coast Hospital, where he sees referrals across a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including knee, hip, foot, ankle, wrist, and hand disorders.

His surgical expertise includes hip and knee replacement surgery, arthroscopic procedures of the knee and hip, ankle and foot surgery, as well as treatment of hand conditions such as trigger finger, carpal tunnel syndrome, and Dupuytren’s contracture. He also manages congenital deformities and performs a range of reconstructive orthopaedic procedures.

Mr Mannion studied medicine at University of Cambridge before undertaking basic surgical training in the South East Thames region. His career has included extensive international humanitarian work, including surgical roles with aid organisations in conflict zones such as Afghanistan, Cambodia, Angola, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, and Rwanda during the 1994 genocide. He also served as the sole orthopaedic surgeon for central and northern Malawi, covering a population of approximately 6–7 million people.

After returning to the UK in 2003, he completed a knee surgery fellowship at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals before taking up a consultant post at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. He continues to maintain links with Malawi, where he remains involved in training and research programmes.

He passed the FRCS examination in 1994 and completed higher surgical training on the Guy’s and St Thomas’ rotation. Following this, he achieved FRCS (Tr & Orth) in 1999 and undertook a trauma fellowship in San Antonio, Texas, where he completed research on the biomechanics of landmine injuries as part of his MChir dissertation.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
