Mr. O'Brien also had the opportunity to work with elite athletes, providing care as part of the orthopaedic team for the Queensland Reds (rugby union), Brisbane Broncos (rugby league), and the Brisbane Bullets (basketball).
While in Brisbane, he collaborated with the physiotherapy department at the University of Queensland, undertaking research projects on ACL reconstruction, rehabilitation, and shoulder stabilisation. He later completed a fellowship in trauma surgery at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, working under trauma surgeon David Helfet.
Mr. O'Brien currently holds a consultant position at Sunderland Royal Hospital, where he focuses on knee replacement, knee arthroscopy, anterior ligament reconstruction, and sports medicine. With over 20 years of experience Mr O'Brien has now performed over 5,000 toatl knee replacements, 1000 partial knee replacements and 1,500 ACL reconstructions as well as having a large revision knee replacement practice.
