Mr Basu qualified in 1990 from the University of Calcutta, India, and gained his master's degree in general surgery in 1994, receiving the 'Gold Medal' for his work during this time. He obtained his fellowship in surgery in 1997, before embarking on six years of higher training in upper gastrointestinal, laparoscopic, and bariatric (obesity) surgery, working with accomplished surgeons in the field.

Mr Basu is actively involved in research and his topics of interest are gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), complex hernia (open and laparoscopic), and abdominal wall reconstruction.  He is invited as guest speaker on his topics of interest and has made over 100 international and national presentations and has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Mr Basu is actively involved in teaching and leads four medical schools as the surgical director that includes: Kings College, London; St George's London, Kent and Canterbury Medical School, Canterbury and George's Grenada.

He is member of multiple organisations : AUGIS, BOMSS, GMC and BMA

He is in the subcommittee for Abdominal Wall Reconstruction for British Hernia Society.
