About
He specialises in vitreoretinal surgery and cataract surgery and is skilled in the treatment of a wide range of retinal problems, as well as complex cataract surgery, having performed more than 3,000 vitreoretinal procedures and 6,000 cataract procedures during his 17 years of practice.
He undertakes all forms of retinal and vitreous surgery, treating conditions including:
• Macular hole
• Vitreomacular traction syndrome
• Epiretinal membrane
• Retinal detachment
• Diabetic eye disease
• Vitreous haemorrhage
• Vitreous floaters
• Eye trauma
• Complications of cataract surgery
Mr Costen completed his specialist training in Southampton and undertook a fellowship at the renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. He is also a surgical trainer and has trained numerous fellows in retinal surgery who have later become consultants. He is currently a fellowship examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a senior clinical tutor at Hull York Medical School.
Mr Costen has also previously been the principal investigator for a number of surgical retina clinical trials.
He is married with three children and is actively involved in his local church. His hobbies include cycling, music and gardening.
