Mr Ben Sherwood is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at The Park Hospital, Nottingham (part of Circle Health Group), Nottingham City Hospital (Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust), and the Nottingham Urology Group.
He specialises in urological oncology, minimally invasive surgery, and robotic surgery. His key clinical interests include prostate cancer, kidney and bladder cancer, benign prostate disease, and male lower urinary tract symptoms. He has extensive experience in robotic prostatectomy using the da Vinci Surgical System and in minimally invasive surgery for kidney and upper urinary tract malignancy. He also leads the urology cancer multidisciplinary team at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Mr Sherwood performs a wide range of procedures, including robotic and open prostatectomy, prostate cancer diagnostics and treatment, prostate mapping, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), transurethral resection of bladder tumours (TURBT), laparoscopic nephrectomy, cystoscopy (flexible and rigid), ureteroscopy, urethrotomy, vasectomy, hydrocele repair, removal of benign scrotal lumps, adult circumcision, and management of testicular cancer. He is highly regarded for his expertise in robotic prostate surgery and complex urological cancer care.
He graduated from Nottingham Medical School in 1998 and completed surgical training in the Trent region. In 2002, he was awarded a British Urological Foundation scholarship to undertake a two-year research programme into bladder cancer, which led to the award of his MD. He subsequently worked at Auckland City Hospital, New Zealand, gaining experience in oncological and reconstructive urology, followed by higher surgical training in the East Midlands. In 2010, he undertook a fellowship in Western Australia, where he further developed his expertise in urological cancer, robotic surgery, and minimal access surgery. He has been a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Nottingham City Hospital since 2012.
Alongside clinical practice, Mr Sherwood is active in teaching and research. He provides training in robotic prostate surgery to medical colleagues internationally, supervises medical students and trainee surgeons, and has published widely in the fields of prostate cancer and laparoscopic surgery. He is also a regular speaker at national and international meetings.
He is a member of the British Association of Urological Surgery, the European Urology Association, and the British Medical Association.
