Professor Arul Ramasamy is a Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon based in Milton Keynes, Northampton, and Banbury. His practice is exclusively dedicated to foot and ankle surgery, and his patient-centred, research-driven approach means every treatment plan is focused on the individual needs and outcomes of each patient. He sees over 750 patients each year with a wide range of foot and ankle conditions.
Professor Ramasamy studied Medicine at Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge before completing Basic Surgical Training in Newcastle. He attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for Officer Training and has over 25 years of experience as a serving British Army officer. He undertook a PhD in Bioengineering at Imperial College London from 2008 to 2012, during which time he completed a thesis on foot and ankle combat injuries which led to the development of new technology to reduce blast injuries. He commenced Higher Surgical Training in Orthopaedics and Trauma on the Birmingham Rotation in 2011 and is triple fellowship trained (Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Birmingham — Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre Oxford — Fortius Clinic London), including the only UK-based Sports Foot and Ankle Fellowship which almost exclusively managed Professional Athletes. In June 2025, he was awarded an MBA with Distinction from the University of Staffordshire, reflecting his commitment to healthcare leadership and management in addition to his clinical and academic roles.
Throughout his career, Professor Ramasamy has gained extensive experience in the management of high-level athletes and in managing complex foot and ankle injuries in military personnel, facilitating swift return to activity. He currently serves as an Army Orthopaedic Surgeon (Colonel) with operational experience in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa.
In addition to his clinical practice, Professor Ramasamy has a strong academic profile, with over 100 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. He works at Imperial College London as Clinical Lead for the Centre for Injury Studies and Visiting Professor in the Department of Bioengineering, supervising PhD students in stem cell research and reducing disability from complex foot and ankle trauma. He was appointed Defence Professor of Trauma and Orthopaedics by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburghin 2023, and is Head of the Academic Department of Military Trauma and Orthopaedics. He is the proud recipient of the ABC (American-British-Canadian) Travelling Fellowship by the British Orthopaedic Association and is winner of over 20 prizes and over £5.3 million in grants relating to his research.
Professor Ramasamy strongly believes that to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients, it involves engaging them in the decision-making process and utilising non-operative techniques where possible. Should surgery be required, he believes that the best results come from meticulous planning and precise execution. He works closely with all his patients to develop a treatment plan tailored to their needs and requirements, helping them return to their normal level of fitness as soon as possible.
