About Mr Alan Farthing

Mr Alan Farthing, Consultant Gynaecologist, currently works within Queen Charlotte's Hospital and St Mary's Hospital. He also sees patients privately in several clinics in London. He has a wealth of experience in performing laparoscopic surgery, with many of his patients coming from fellow surgeons due to his expertise. Mr Farthing graduated from St Georges Hospital Medical School, before moving on to several London-based hospitals (Guy's, Hammersmith, and St Mary's) to undergo his specialist training in gynaecology and obstetrics. He further developed his skills by doing sub-specialist training abroad in Australia in the surgical management of gynecologic malignancies. The skills he learnt in Australia he brought back to the UK, where he was one of a few surgeons at the time that knew about and could perform laparoscopic surgery. He was later appointed to a consultant at St Mary's Hospital in 1997. During his time there, he established the Laparoscopic Surgical Service. He then moved to Hammersmith and Queen Charlotte's hospital in 2003, where he established the well-respected Gynaecological Cancer Centre. Mr Farthing is an active researcher, with publications focusing on the link between HPV and cervical cancer, fertility preservation for young patients with gynaecological cancer, and laparoscopic hysterectomy for endometrial cancer. He was the first surgeon globally to perform a keyhole trachelectomy on a pregnant patient suffering from cervical cancer.

"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
