Miss Vigdis Thorisdottir is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon based at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds. She qualified in 1992 from the University of Iceland before relocating to the UK in 1997 to pursue her surgical career.
She completed her basic surgical training in London and subsequently joined the East of England Trauma and Orthopaedic training programme as a Specialist Registrar on the Cambridge rotation. Following completion of her higher specialist training, she undertook further subspecialty fellowship training in Foot and Ankle Surgery at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, gaining advanced expertise in the management of complex foot and ankle conditions. She has held a substantive Consultant post at the West Suffolk Hospital since 2008 and has had an independent practice at the St Edmunds hospital in Bury St Edmunds since 2010.
Beyond her clinical practice, Miss Thorisdottir has held various positions at the West Suffolk Hospital including Clinical Lead for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery and Clinical Lead for implementation of Allocate e-rostering and workforce management software across the Trust. She oversaw Resident Doctor training and rota in her earlier years as a Consultant and is a founding member of the Diabetic Foot multidisciplinary team, setting up and developing the service over the years.
Miss Thorisdottir has enjoyed teaching the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons throughout her career and been invited to do so at local, national and international venues.
Her practice includes the assessment and treatment of a wide range of foot and ankle disorders, offering evidence-based management options with a patient-centred approach. She prides herself giving patients the time and attention they need to discuss their concerns, explaining their diagnosis carefully along with investigations advised and surgical and non-surgical treatment choices.
Miss Thorisdottir is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the British Orthopaedic Association and the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.
