Helping children and young people feel understood, and supporting families to move forward with clarity and confidence.
Dr Josephine Neale MBBS BSc MRCPsych is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist specialising in the assessment and treatment of mental health difficulties in children and young people.
She trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital and has worked across national specialist child and adolescent mental health services in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Alongside her clinical work, she holds academic roles as an Honorary Associate Professor at University College London and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London.
Dr Neale has extensive experience supporting children, adolescents, and families with a wide range of mental health presentations. Her areas of particular interest include autism spectrum disorder (ASD), eating disorders (including avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, or ARFID), anxiety, and somatic symptoms (where emotional distress presents through physical symptoms).
Her approach is thoughtful, collaborative, and grounded in an understanding of the close relationship between physical and mental health. She places strong emphasis on creating a calm, supportive space where young people feel understood, and where families feel guided and reassured.
Approach to Care
Dr Neale offers comprehensive, developmentally informed mental health assessments and personalised treatment recommendations for children and adolescents.
Her work is centred on building a clear understanding of each young person’s needs, emotionally, physically, and developmentally, while also considering the wider family and school context. She works closely with parents and carers, recognising their central role in supporting their child’s wellbeing.
Her approach is particularly suited to families who are:
Seeking clarity around a possible diagnosis
Feeling uncertain about what is driving their child’s difficulties
Looking for a thorough, expert-led assessment without long waiting times
Wanting a joined-up, thoughtful plan rather than fragmented advice
Academic and Research Background
Dr Neale’s clinical work is underpinned by a strong academic foundation. She completed her medical training at the Royal Free and University College Medical School, where she also gained a BSc in Medical Sciences (Physiology and Pharmacology).
She remains actively involved in research and education. Her work includes contributing to a national study on avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) in the UK and Ireland, and she has previously served as an adviser to the Academy of Eating Disorders Medical Care Standards Committee.
Dr Neale has published research in peer-reviewed journals, including work on growth in young people with eating disorders, and has contributed to academic writing on the links between mental and physical health.
She also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (with Distinction) and continues to teach medical students, postgraduate trainees, and clinicians in child and adolescent mental health.
