Dr James Stefaniak
Psychiatry
About
Dr Stefaniak possesses a unique foundation in physical and mental health training. After completing a Master’s in Medical Sciences with a Triple First from the University of Cambridge and a Medical Degree with Distinction from the University of Oxford, he initially pursued an Academic Clinical Fellowship in Neurology. He subsequently completed an Academic Clinical Fellowship in Psychiatry at Cambridge and Specialist Psychiatry Training in North London. This extensive dual training is reflected in his membership of both the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Psychiatrists. During his training, he also spent time at the National Affective Disorders Service at the Maudsley Hospital and a dedicated year in neuropsychiatry at the world-renowned National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London.
In his clinical practice, Dr Stefaniak has extensive experience managing adult ADHD, complex depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, OCD, and trauma-related conditions such as PTSD. Having worked within specialist teams across these areas, he is highly skilled in diagnosing and treating intricate psychiatric presentations. He is approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act and holds Approved Clinician status.
Dr Stefaniak has received extensive training in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, which includes completing the PULSES course from the Clinical TMS Society and working within the specialist TMS service at North London NHS Foundation Trust. Dr Stefaniak provides closely monitored, holistic care. He carefully combines neuromodulation, medication, and psychological approaches to build highly personalised treatment plans for each individual.
Dr Stefaniak holds a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience that focused on identifying the most effective areas of the brain for TMS treatment in patients experiencing post-stroke language difficulties. His thesis was passed without corrections. With over twenty peer-reviewed publications in prestigious academic journals, Dr Stefaniak is deeply committed to evidence-based practice. He serves as a Journal Review Editor and actively engages in service development.
Dr Stefaniak believes in empathetic, holistic care that focuses on understanding the whole person rather than merely their symptoms. Outside of his clinical commitments, he maintains a strong interest in personal wellbeing, which he encourages in all his patients. He travels widely and reads extensively about developments in technology and neuroscience.
“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
