About Mr James Gill
Mr James Gill is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with specialist expertise in knee conditions, offering comprehensive care to patients of all ages. He holds an NHS post at the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust in Bury St Edmunds and also consults privately at St Edmunds Hospital. His practice is dedicated to improving function, reducing pain and helping patients return to the activities they enjoy through precise assessment and personalised treatment planning. Mr Gill specialises in the full spectrum of knee surgery, including partial (uni-compartmental) knee replacement, total knee replacement, ACL reconstruction, and knee-preservation procedures such as osteotomy and meniscal repair. He performs a high volume of knee replacements—over 200 per year—with approximately 40% of these being partial knee replacements. Mr Gill is actively engaged in advancing orthopaedic knowledge and has published more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific papers, contributing to ongoing improvements in knee surgery and sports injury management. His medical training began at Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge, where he studied from 2005 to 2009. He completed his foundation training at West Suffolk and Cambridge University Hospitals before spending a year as a junior doctor at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. He subsequently undertook Core Surgical Training and then higher Orthopaedic Specialty Training across the East of England from 2015 to 2021. During this time, he earned a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine from the University of Bath. Mr Gill completed a prestigious fellowship at the Brisbane Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre in 2022, training under leading knee surgeons Dr Peter Myers, Dr Tim McMeniman and Dr Tony O’Neill. This world-renowned fellowship provided extensive exposure to complex knee surgery and sports-related injuries, including work with elite athletes.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
