About Mr Harith Akram (Honorary Associate Professor)

Mr Harith Akram is a Consultant Neurosurgeon and Honorary Associate Professor at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (UCLH) and the Unit of Functional Neurosurgery at University College London (UCL) in Queen Square. He also sees private patients at The Lister Hospital (HCA Healthcare UK) in Chelsea. Mr Akram sees patients with general neurosurgical pathologies and has specialist expertise in functional neurosurgery (Deep Brain Stimulation DBS for movement disorders and cluster headache), surgical management of facial pain (trigeminal neuralgia, SUNCT, and SUNA), and simple spine surgery. He routinely performs microvascular decompression (MVD) and radiofrequency thermocoagulation for trigeminal neuralgia, and offers surgical treatment for conditions such as disc herniation and other degenerative spinal disorders.  Mr Akram has expertise in the surgical management of refractory pain and carries out cingulotomy surgery for cancer and diffuse, refractory non-cancer pain.  He also performs MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) for patients with medication-refractory tremor, including essential tremor and tremor-dominant Parkinson’s disease. These procedures are carried out at the Queen Square Imaging Centre as part of a multidisciplinary service.  Mr Akram was awarded the Norman Dott Gold Medal for achieving the highest mark in the FRCS (Neurosurgery) examination, and received the Cutlers’ Surgical Prize from the Royal College of Surgeons for innovation in surgical instrument design. He completed clinical fellowships at Queen Square (UCLH) and the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, where he was awarded the Marjorie Newsome Fellowship (2013). He serves on the board of the World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (WSSFN) and is Editor-in-Chief of the WSSFN newsletter. He is a regular keynote speaker and invited lecturer at major neurosurgical meetings worldwide. Mr Akram’s research focuses on advanced MRI techniques and connectomic neurosurgery. His PhD, awarded by UCL and titled The Application of Advanced MRI Connectivity in Functional Neurosurgery, received the Queen Square Symposium PhD Prize (2018). He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and is actively involved in clinical trials and translational research aimed at enhancing the safety and efficacy of neurosurgical interventions.
