Dr Tharakaram has an interest in research, in particular, cutaneous metastases and medical history. He has published over 50 research articles in peer-reviewed journals and has presented his work nationally and internationally. His MD Thesis on Cutaneous Metastases is the largest prospective study on that topic to date. Dr Tharakaram also lectures and is a guest speaker at the annual meeting of the Indian Association of Dermatologists.

Dr Tharakaram is involved in medical education and he runs an annual course for GPs in dermatology.

Outside of work, Dr Tharakaram enjoys classical Indian and Western music and studying the history of medicine.
