About Prof Michael Bloomfield
I'm an award-winning general adult psychiatrist who works with adults. I am trained both in psychopharmacology (using medication) and in cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), a type of psychotherapy (talking therapy). I am a Principal Clinical Research Fellow at University College London (UCL) where I lead a research group. In the NHS I work at the Traumatic Stress Clinic at St Pancras Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. I regularly lecture at UCL and I have been invited to lecture internationally. I teach students in medicine, psychology and the neurosciences, as well as doctors undertaking specialist post-graduate training in psychiatry. I am particularly interested in treating depression, psychosis and schizoprenia spectrum disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) including Complex PTSD and dissociation, anxiety disorders and people who struggle with regulating their own emotions and maintaining stable relationships. I have an interest in neuropsychiatry. I am also interested in helping people who are neurodiverse, have difficulties with attention inlucluding ADHD and people who are on the autistic spectrum. I have published over 100 articles in leading peer-reviewed journals including Nature, the Lancet Psychiatry, World Psychiatry and the British Medical Journal. I undertook my medical degree at the University of Oxford, before working in London and the Channel Islands. As a junior doctor I worked as an air ambulance doctor - which I loved. I went on to train in psychiatry at Charing Cross Hospital and later became a Medical Research Council clinical research fellow at Hammersmith Hospital where I did a PhD in Clinical Medicine at Imperial College London. I am a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. I have built up a wealth of experience in the NHS, including community mental health, acute in-patient psychiatry, treatment-resistant psychosis, severe mental illness, crisis resolution and helping people with personality disorder diagnoses. I have advanced training in enhanced cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) from the University of Oxford. I have a certificate in Psychopharmacology from the British Association for Psychopharmacology. I am an approved clinician under section 12 of the Mental Health Act.
