Miss Christina Mary Summerhayes is a highly experienced Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon based in Hampshire, with more than 20 years of dedicated practice in breast cancer surgery.
Miss Summerhayes is passionate about achieving the best possible outcomes for every patient. Her approach is rooted in personalised, compassionate care—taking time to listen, understand each patient’s concerns, and provide clear, supportive guidance throughout their treatment journey. She ensures that all treatment options are fully explained, empowering patients to make informed decisions with confidence. Her philosophy recognises that breast cancer is not only a medical condition but also a profoundly personal experience.
She graduated from Imperial College London in 2001 and undertook her surgical training within the Wessex region, followed by a prestigious National Fellowship in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery. She became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2011 and was appointed as a Consultant at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) in 2012.
Over the course of her career, Miss Summerhayes has performed more than 1,000 breast cancer procedures. Her extensive expertise includes breast-conserving surgery, mastectomy, breast reconstruction, symmetrisation procedures, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and axillary clearance. She has provided breast cancer surgery in the NHS for more than two decades and continues to offer advanced oncoplastic care in both NHS and private settings.
As Lead Clinician of the Breast Unit at University Hospital Southampton, she played a pivotal role in improving surgical outcomes and developing the service. She now serves as Trust Clinical Cancer Lead for the entire UHS Trust, overseeing the delivery and optimisation of cancer management pathways while continuing her clinical work as a Consultant Breast Surgeon.
In addition to her clinical leadership, Miss Summerhayes has contributed nationally to the advancement of breast cancer care. She has served as an advisor to Macmillan Cancer Support and was a member of the writing group for the Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction: Guidelines for Best Practice, helping to shape standards for high-quality, patient-focused surgical care.
