Following that, he completed specialist fellowships in Complex Devices and Advanced Heart Failure in Calgary, Canada, and at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. He earned his MD (Res) in Cardiovascular Genetics from University College London in 2009 and became a certified cardiac device specialist in 2012. In 2014, he was awarded his CCT in cardiology.

Dr Muthumala has previously been the Clinical Lead for Heart Failure at North Middlesex, and he is currently the Clinical Lead for Devices at Barts Heart Centre.

He is a member of the British Society of Heart Failure, and is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
