Dr Ailsa Care
General Practice (GP)
About
Dr. Care is passionate about exploring alternative approaches to medication. In 2004, she expanded her expertise by training in medical acupuncture. She utilised this skill to effectively address pain management in patients who either struggled with poorly controlled pain using traditional medications or faced challenges with strong painkillers due to side effects.
Around a decade ago, Dr. Care encountered her own health challenges, involving a range of seemingly unrelated symptoms such as fatigue, cognitive fog, muscle pain, abdominal discomfort, unusual tingling and buzzing sensations, and persistent itching in one foot that disrupted her sleep. Despite numerous investigations, no significant abnormalities were detected, and her condition was attributed to stress.
Determined to uncover the root cause of her illness and regain her health, Dr. Care discovered the field of environmental medicine. She consulted with an Environmental Medicine practitioner who conducted a thorough assessment, including blood tests, stool analysis, and intradermal testing for food and inhalant sensitivities. The results revealed multiple food sensitivities, candida overgrowth, a parasitic infection, and various nutritional deficiencies.
Her treatment journey involved a targeted approach to address each of these issues one by one. Gradually, she began to experience improvements in her health. Dr. Care's personal experience ignited a renewed passion for medicine and a desire to share her knowledge to help patients with challenging health conditions.
While continuing her role as an NHS GP, Dr. Care has integrated elements of both Functional and Environmental Medicine into her practice. However, she acknowledges that time constraints and limited access to functional testing within the NHS pose challenges. Nonetheless, she remains committed to offering valuable advice on lifestyle and nutrition to her patients, recognising the positive impact it can have on their well-being. Dr. Care envisions a future where these approaches become more routine within the NHS, potentially transforming healthcare for the better.
“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
