Hengl studierte Humanmedizin an der Universität Innsbruck und promovierte dort im Jahr 1973. Er ist Mitglied der Österreichischen Ärztekammer und nimmt regelmäßig an Fortbildungen teil, um seine Kenntnisse und Fähigkeiten auf dem neuesten Stand der Wissenschaft zu halten.
