About Mr Stephen Alistair Stewart
Mr Stephen Stewart is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon based at Cathedral Eye Clinic in Belfast, where he specialises in cataract, refractive, and complex anterior segment surgery. He provides expert care in procedures such as refractive lens exchange, YAG laser treatment, cataract surgery, and laser vision correction. He graduated with distinction from the University of Cambridge and University College London Medical Schools, receiving both the Allen Goldsmith Prize in Ophthalmology and the TC Yu Bequest Award for his elective at the University of Auckland. Following completion of ophthalmology specialty training in the Northern Ireland Deanery, he undertook a fellowship in cataract and refractive surgery in Belfast with Professor Johnny Moore, followed by a second fellowship in anterior segment surgery under Dr Tun Kuan Yeo at Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore. Mr Stewart became a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2019. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery from the University of Ulster and earned the Royal College’s Certificate in Laser Refractive Surgery in 2021. Alongside his clinical work, he is actively involved in education and research. He organises and delivers national and international surgical skills courses and contributes to the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ National Ophthalmology Database Audit as a member of the Cataract Advisory Group. His research focuses on outcomes and safety in cataract and refractive surgery, and he is currently collaborating with Queen’s University Belfast to explore how machine learning can improve astigmatism correction. He has also worked internationally with Khmer Sight Foundation, providing cataract surgery in Cambodia.
