About Prof Charles Claoué
Professor Charles Claoué is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon with extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of eye conditions. He sees private patients at The Holly Hospital in Buckhurst Hill, Spire Hartswood Hospital in Brentwood, and holds an NHS post at Queen’s Hospital in Romford, where he works as part of Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. At The Holly Hospital, he offers advanced treatment for cataract and refractive conditions, including the use of toric and multifocal intraocular lenses. His clinical work also includes refractive surgery such as LASIK and PTK, surgery for presbyopia, and the use of intraocular lenses for age-related macular degeneration. He manages viral and external eye diseases, dry eye, corneal conditions including corneal transplantation, and visual impairment in children. At Spire Hartswood Hospital, Professor Claoué provides care for patients with cataracts, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. He performs a range of procedures including refractive lens exchange, laser eye treatments such as YAG laser capsulotomy, and corneal grafts, including penetrating keratoplasty, DSEK and DALK. He treats refractive errors including myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism, and presbyopia through lens and corneal surgery. He has been practising since 1981 and qualified from the University of Cambridge. He was later awarded a Wellcome Trust Research Fellowship at Bristol Eye Hospital and completed two fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Professor Claoué holds an honorary clinical lectureship at QMC University of London and frequently delivers international lectures on advanced intraocular lens technology. He has published more than 80 articles in the field of ophthalmology and received the International Academy for Advances in Ophthalmology Gold Medal for Distinguished Services to Ophthalmology in 2010. He is a member of several professional organisations, including the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the UK and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the British Society for Refractive Surgery, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the Academy of Experts, the International Intraocular Implant Society, and the Institute of Directors.
