Professor Dag Aarsland is a leading Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in Old Age Psychiatry, with a particular focus on dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and related neuropsychiatric conditions. He is Head of the Department of Old Age Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London, and Lead Consultant at the Parkinson Spectrum Memory Clinic within South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.
With extensive international experience, Professor Aarsland has held professorships in Norway and Sweden, including at the Karolinska Institute and the Universities of Bergen and Oslo. He previously established the Centre for Age-Related Diseases at Stavanger University Hospital and has led pioneering work in cognitive and mood disorders in older adults.
His research has been instrumental in shaping international diagnostic criteria for Dementia with Lewy Bodies and Parkinson’s disease, and he played a key role in the development of rivastigmine for Parkinsonian dementia. Professor Aarsland continues to lead research into the links between depression and cognitive impairment, as well as biomarker development and clinical trials.
He is widely published, an international speaker, and deeply committed to advancing care and understanding of neurodegenerative diseases in older adults.
