Dr Allan graduated from University College London Medical School in 2001 and undertook specialist training in Gastroenterology in Oxford and surrounding hospitals. He then undertook research into immune cell signalling in Crohn's disease and gained his DPil in 2013. Following his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), he completed a post-CCT fellowship in Advanced Nutrition where he spent 6 months in the Intestinal Failure Unit at Salford Royal 6 months with the Intestinal Rehabilitation and Transplant teams in Oxford.

Dr Allan is widely published in the fields of clinical nutrition, intestinal failure and intestinal transplantation. He has research interests in intestinal failure associated liver disease and immunological cell tracking.
