Dr Padmanabhan Shakkottai is a Consultant Cardiologist with a specialist interest in cardiac electrophysiology and cardiac device implantation. He has been practising as a consultant for seven years and has extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of complex heart rhythm disorders.
Dr Shakkottai manages all aspects of arrhythmia care, including outpatient ambulatory rhythm monitoring using Holter monitors, CardioMemo systems and Kardia mobile devices. He performs electrophysiology (EP) studies and catheter ablation procedures for a wide range of arrhythmias, including complex cases requiring electro-anatomic mapping. To date, he has performed close to 800 cardiac ablations and implanted approximately 1,000 cardiac devices during his training and consultant career.
His device expertise includes implantation and management of pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices. He also performs advanced procedures such as epicardial ventricular tachycardia ablation and specialises in programming and long-term management of defibrillators.
Dr Shakkottai has particular expertise in Inherited Cardiac Conditions and is part of the established Inherited Cardiac Conditions team at Hull University Teaching Hospitals (HUTH), where he leads on arrhythmia management within this service. He is also the Joint Clinical Lead in Cardiology at HUTH and serves as a local principal investigator for international clinical trials.
His clinical work includes comprehensive rhythm assessment, ECG interpretation, exercise testing and integration of findings with advanced cardiac imaging. He is currently leading the introduction of Conduction System Pacing within his NHS practice, with plans to expand availability into the independent sector once fully established.
