Dr Omar Fersia is a highly experienced Consultant Cardiologist based at Forth Valley Royal Hospital and serves as Cardiac Devices Lead for NHS Forth Valley. Dr Fersia graduated with MBChB (with Honours) from the University of Dundee in 2007 and completed his early medical training at NHS Tayside. He undertook specialist cardiology training at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, NHS Lothian, where he developed advanced skills in cardiac imaging and device implantation. He was appointed Consultant Cardiologist in 2019 and has since held key leadership roles, including Cardiac Services Lead in NHS Dumfries and Galloway, before joining NHS Forth Valley in 2020 to lead and develop the cardiac devices service.
He holds professional accreditation in advanced cardiac imaging from the British Society of Echocardiography ( Transthoracic Echocardiogram: 3D, contrast and bubbles echo, Transoesophageal Echocardiogram and stress echocardiogram) in addition to cardiac CT abd MRI and is certified by the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) in cardiac device implantation, including pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT), conduction system pacing, and subcutaneous ICD implantation.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Fersia is actively involved in teaching and research. He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow and Foundation Programme Director in NHS Forth Valley. His research portfolio includes work on heart failure and cardiac imaging, as well as national studies evaluating the impact of COVID-19 on cardiac services in Scotland.
