About Mr Nigel D'Souza
Mr. Nigel D'Souza is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon based at the Spire Southampton Hospital, and University Hospital Southampton. Mr D'Souza graduated from UCL Medical School in 2007 and subsequently underwent surgical training in London, Oxford, South Africa, and Wessex. During this time he worked at national centres including St George's Hospital, the John Radcliffe, Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, Basingstoke and University Hospital Southampton. After acquiring his certificate of completion of training in 2021, he spent two years on international fellowship in Sydney. He first worked in Concord Repatriation Hospital, a high volume referral centre advanced techniques in colorectal and general surgery. He then worked for Professor Mike Solomon in complex cancer surgery at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Australia's #1 hospital and the world's highest volume pelvic exenteration service. Mr. D'Souza elective practice encompasses the diagnosis and management of colon, rectal, and anal cancer, offering state-of-the-art surgical treatments using both Da Vinci robotic and laparoscopic platforms. He has a special interest in significant polyps and early colorectal cancer (SPECC), endometriosis surgery, and proctology, after learning a number of advanced techniques to treat haemorrhoids and fistulas on fellowship. Committed to staying at the forefront of surgical innovations, Mr. D'Souza regularly visits UK and overseas units to update his skills and knowledge. In 2025, he was awarded the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract travelling fellowship, which allowed him to visit the University of Minnesota. During his training, he spent 2 years as a colorectal cancer research fellow at Croydon University Hospital and the Royal Marsden. He was awarded his PhD by Imperial College. His groundbreaking research with Muti Abulafi on the faecal immunochemical test led to a national change in practice after recognition by NICE guidelines. This research was awarded the Moynihan Prize, BJS Prize, and John of Arderne Medal; the top 3 UK research prizes in general and colorectal surgery. As the principal investigator for several research trials at Southampton, Mr. D'Souza continues to offer patients cutting-edge treatments, including participation in an international colorectal cancer vaccine study.
