About Mr Thomas Boon Lam
Mr Thomas Lam became a full-time NHS consultant urological surgeon and honorary senior lecturer at the Department of Urology, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in 2016. He is majorly interested in robotic radical prostatectomy- prostate cancer, kidney cancer, urinary tract infections and management of lower urinary tract symptoms in males and females. His clinical experience started after he graduated from Leeds School of Medicine on a British Council scholarship in 1997. Mr Lam had basic surgical training in Leeds and moved to the University of Hull Postgraduate Medical Institute for a clinical research fellowship on Surgical Oncology and Tumour Immunology that led to a PhD degree in 2005. He had a specialist training in Urology through the East of Scotland Training Programme in Urology and it involved moving through Aberdeen and Edinburgh and lately focused on academic urology and laparoscopic pelvic oncology. In 2011, Mr Lam became a senior clinical lecturer and honorary consultant urological surgeon at the Academic Urology Unit of the University of Aberdeen on a clinical academic portfolio. His specialisation was in clinical trials, evidence synthesis, guideline development and core outcome set development. He has had over 7 million pounds aggregated grant income as chief investigator, co-applicant and co-chief investigator in some clinical trials and projects funded by the government of the U.K. Mr Lam has over 100 peer-reviewed articles in distinguished journals with Lancet, Lancet Oncology, and European Urology inclusive. He is invited frequently to deliver lectures and teach urological trainees and clinicians at workshops based on his renowned expertise in managing prostate cancer and kidney cancer, in clinical trial methodology, evidence synthesis and clinical guideline development. He belongs to two associations in charge of clinical practice guidelines issuance to urologists globally for the management of prostate cancer and kidney cancer (the European Association of Urology Prostate Cancer Guideline Panel as well as European Association of Urology Kidney Cancer Guideline Panel). He loves outstanding communication, being able to listen, being humble, and respecting patients and colleagues.
