Mr. Robin O'Donel Calderwood is a fully trained Vascular Surgeon with a wide range of general vascular interests. He works in one of the largest Vascular Units in the NHS, which handles a high volume of general vascular disorders. Mr. Calderwood has expertise in treating arterial disease of the limbs, carotid disease, aortic disease, and vascular access for renal insufficiency and dialysis. Additionally, he has developed a large diabetic foot practice. He has a particular interest in the treatment of leg ulcers and the underlying vascular causes, leading to extensive training in venous disease treatment. He takes a proactive approach to treating complex venous and arteriovenous diseases affecting the legs. This experience has allowed him to offer a wide range of treatment options for patients with varicose veins, tailored to individual needs.
Mr. Calderwood emphasises the importance of communication and ensuring that patients understand their condition, available treatment options, and management expectations. He completed his medical training at St. Andrews and Manchester Universities, qualifying in 1998. His basic surgical training was completed in Manchester, followed by higher surgical training in Liverpool. He holds the MRCS and FRCS qualifications from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Prior to higher surgical training, he spent two years as a Lecturer in Surgery and completed a research MD in blood transfusion medicine from Manchester University in 2011.
In 2013, Mr. Calderwood was appointed Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust. He is fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and actively participates in the re-validation process. He is a full member of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland, as well as the European Society of Vascular and Endovascular Surgeons. Additionally, he is a member of the British Medical Association and Royal Society of Medicine, with a particular interest in the Venous Forum.
