I am currently the senior Foot and ankle surgeon at the Bucks NHS Trust and my NHS practice revolves around Wycombe General Hospital and Stoke Mandeville Hospital and my private practice predominantly is at the BMI Chiltern Hospital, Great Missenden.
Timeline:
1984 to 1989:
Subsequently I started my orthopaedic residency at the same institute which involved being on call and doing emergency work on alternate days from 1989 to 1995. Grant Medical College being the only state-run hospital had a drainage area of more than 20 million and hence the workload and experience was unimaginable.
Being a level 1 trauma centre, there were several polytraumas every day which I had to deal with.
I got to train in all specialities of orthopaedics and my initial training was focussed on trauma and then doing foot and ankle, paediatric and spinal surgery.
1993 to 1995:
I came to the UK in July 1995 and re did my residency in the St. George's, London rotation. I worked and trained under several known and respected surgeons in and around the London hospitals, including working under the Orthoapedic Surgeon to the Queen at the time.
I rotated around various hospitals in the south of England including, St. Georges's hospital, Tooting, St Peters Hospital, Chertsey, Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford, Worthing and Southlands, hospital, The East Surrey Hospital, Surrey.
I finished my orthopaedics training in 2000, by which time I had obtained 3 more degrees, FRCS from RCS England, M Ch Orthopaedics from the University of Liverpool and the FRCS Orthopaedics which is the orthopaedics exit exam in the UK.
2000 to 2003:
I then went to the Royal United Hospitals Bath as a Senior Registrar and spent most of my time doing hip and knee surgery including revision surgery. This was an extremely important post for me as being the Senior Registrar I was given the responsibility of running most theatre lists and training my junior trainee colleagues.
2004 to 2005:
I got appointed as a substantive Consultant at the Bucks NHS Trust in 2005 and has been there ever since.
I was asked to set up the Foot and Ankle service in Bucks as there was no service prior to that. Once I established the service, there was no looking backward and the service went from strength to strength, to a point that approximately 5 years ago, I appointed my colleague to share the burden, who then left the Trust. After his departure the department have appointed 2 more Consultants, and we 3 now run the foot and ankle service in our Trust.
I feel that considering my breadth of knowledge across all specialities in orthopaedics gives me a better perspective about a patient in general rather than just focus on a part of the body.
In 2020, I have completed more than30years of just doing Orthopaedic surgery and this has allowed me to mature within the profession.
I am up-to-date with my subspecialty which is mainly foot and ankle and knee reconstructive surgery, and I feel honoured and privileged to serve my society.
I do all aspects of foot and ankle surgery including bunions, ankle ligament reconstructions, revison operations, midfoot and hindfoot surgery, arthroscopic surgery and soft tissue knee ligament surgery. These are just a few examples of what I do in my day to day life.
During my spare time, I enjoy spending time with the family and keep myself active playing cricket in the summer and going to the gym, playing badminton and trying to play golf in the winter.
I have been playing club cricket for the Great Missenden Pelicans since 2001 and am now a senior player and in fact for the season of 2016 and 2017 and 2018 I got the most wickets for the club.
