About Mr Majid Hashemi
Mr Majid Hashemi is the Senior Bariatric and Upper GI Consultant Surgeon in North London. He specialises in surgery on the oesophagus and stomach, and performs anti-reflux surgery and surgery for obesity. Procedures he carries out include laparoscopic hiatus hernia repair and Linx implant, abdominal hernia repair, laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic gastric banding and endoscopic gastric balloon placement. Mr Hashemi graduated from Manchester University before training in London and at Addenbrooke's and other hospitals in East Anglia. He spent 15 months as a fellow to Dr DeMeester at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. In 2001 he was appointed as a Senior Lecturer at University College London and was the Surgical Tutor and Head of Academic Surgery at the Whittington Hospital and Archway Campus between 2001 and 2007. He was also Chair of the Surgery Module Management Group for Surgery Undergraduate Studies for University College Medical School from 2007 to 2010. In 2001 Mr Hashemi established bariatric services in North London, where he set up one of the first Obesity Surgery MDTs in the country, and for a number of years he was the only surgeon performing bariatric surgery in the area. He has a notable safety record, with over 3000 stomach and oesophagus operations performed at a zero mortality rate. In addition to surgery for the treatment of obesity, Mr Hashemi provides an extensive range of services in oesophageal and gastric surgery, including assessment and treatment for patients with hiatus hernia, oesophageal reflux or motility problems including those requiring revision surgeries. He routinely performs oesophageal and gastric resections as part of the team at the designated Cancer Centre at University College London Hospital of which he previously Head of service. Mr Hashemi was one of only 12 surgeons in the UK who offered the LINX procedure for acid reflux and he performed the first Linx implant procedure carried out in London. He was also the first surgeon in the UK to place the Linx device in a patient after a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. His significant experience allows him to give a focused, patient-centred approach, tailoring treatment for each individual and their specific needs. It is his firm belief that patients should be involved in all major decisions throughout their treatment. Mr Hashemi is actively involved in training, education and research and has led a number research projects, and is regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences. He is currently supervising a number of projects including a PhD in clinical aspects of Achalasia of the oesophagus. He is also the Medical Chair of Action for Achalasia.
