About

Mr James Hewes is a highly respected senior Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon, practising at Spire and Nuffield Health Hospitals in Bristol

Gallstone Disease

Mr James Hewes manages all aspects of gallstone disease, including gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) and bile duct exploration for retained stones, with over 1,000 procedures performed. Gallstones are a common condition that can cause significant pain and illness, often affecting quality of life. Mr Hewes understands how debilitating these symptoms can be and is committed to treating patients as promptly and safely as possible to help them return to normal life. Gallbladder surgery is usually performed laparoscopically (keyhole), allowing most patients to go home the same day and have a speedy recovery.

Hernias

While hernias are sometimes dismissed as minor issues, Mr Hewes recognises that they can cause considerable discomfort and impact day-to-day life, including limiting physical activity and family time. He offers surgical treatment for all types of abdominal and groin hernias, including inguinal, femoral, incisional, ventral, umbilical, and recurrent hernias. Whenever appropriate, surgery is performed laparoscopically, which can lead to faster recovery and a quicker return to daily activities. The surgical approach is tailored to the type and size of the hernia.

Weight Loss (Bariatric) Surgery

As an expert bariatric surgeon, Mr Hewes has performed over 1,000 major weight loss procedures. He specialises in a range of operations including Mini and Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Banding, and complex revision surgery. His bariatric practice is delivered through Verve Health Group, where he is a director. The service is known for its excellent safety record and outstanding patient feedback.

Other Procedures

Mr Hewes also offers surgery for hiatus hernia and acid reflux (fundoplication), as well as gastroscopy to investigate conditions affecting the upper gastrointestinal tract..

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
