About

Mr Hamish Hamilton attended medical school in Zimbabwe, and graduated in 1983, from the Godfrey Huggins School of Medicine. After the internship, he went to Philadelphia, USA in 1986 to study in General Surgery, where he completed his residency. After American Board Certification in 1992, he worked at the Groote Schuur Hospital, in Cape Town, South Africa as a Junior/Consultant Surgeon there, developing his surgical skills in a university hospital setting, on clinical rotations of trauma, endocrine/oncology, colorectal, transplant and then vascular surgery till 1997.

Further training in vascular surgery was done in Bournemouth, England, till 1999, and after acceptance on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council (GMC) as a General and Vascular Surgeon, he started as an NHS Consultant in this capacity in 1999 at the Barnet and Chase Farm NHS Trust.

Mr Hamilton has worked there since but now spend most clinical time at the Royal Free Hospital, which is the vascular central hub for North Central London, since centralisation in 2012.

Mr Hamilton has performed a wide range of general and vascular surgery, both as elective and emergency cases since 1992. More recently his interests are specialised in endovascular arterial procedures for occlusive peripheral arterial disease (angioplasty) and for aneurysmal disease (EVAR). He also has an interest in endovenous procedures to treat varicose veins, carotid surgery for stroke as well as peripheral bypass surgery.

Mr Hamilton has remained trained in basic laparoscopic procedures such as cholecystectomy and abdominal hernia repair, and abdominal/bowel surgery and thyroid surgery. This is mainly as a result of the extent of training he received in the USA and South Africa.

Mr Hamilton has published in peer-reviewed medical journals and completed a Masters degree in business management.
