Mr Chatenya Chauhan is a highly experienced Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon, specialising in conditions of the hip, knee, & hand, with expertise in arthroscopic surgery, cartilage preservation, ligament reconstruction, trauma surgery, & joint replacement of the lower limb. TRAINING & BACKGROUND
Mr Chauhan graduated from Dundee University & undertook early surgical training in Sheffield, where he also lectured at the University. His specialist orthopaedic training was completed in Leeds, followed by a fellowship at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, a nationally recognised centre for complex hip & knee surgery.
ARTHROSCOPY, CARTILAGE SURGERY & INNOVATION
A major focus of Mr Chauhan’s career has been arthroscopic knee surgery & cartilage treatment. He undertook cartilage & arthroscopy research at Smith & Nephew’s Research Facility in York, with collaborative work involving University College London, contributing to the early validation & clinical application of cartilage imaging techniques.
He went on to establish & develop a specialist arthroscopic knee service in Southend on Sea, where he was appointed Consultant & continues to practise. His work has centred on joint preserving strategies, aiming to relieve pain, restore function, & delay or avoid joint replacement where appropriate.
Mr Chauhan is particularly recognised for developing minimally invasive techniques for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, including refined approaches to hamstring tendon harvesting designed to reduce tissue trauma & support faster rehabilitation.
JOINT REPLACEMENT, ROBOTICS & INJECTION THERAPIES
In addition to joint preserving surgery, Mr Chauhan has extensive experience in hip & knee joint replacement. He incorporates robot assisted knee replacement technology for suitable patients, allowing improved accuracy of implant positioning, alignment, & soft tissue balance, supporting a personalised approach to surgery & recovery.
He also offers a range of evidence based injection therapies for osteoarthritis & joint pain, including Arthrosamid® hydrogel injections. In selected patients, Arthrosamid injections may provide long lasting pain relief, with clinical evidence demonstrating benefit for several years in some cases, potentially delaying the need for surgical intervention.
HAND SURGERY & ULTRASOUND GUIDED TECHNIQUES
Alongside his lower limb practice, Mr Chauhan regularly treats common hand & wrist conditions. He performs carpal tunnel & trigger finger release, utilising minimally invasive & ultrasound guided techniques. These approaches allow precise targeting of pathology, smaller incisions, & may support faster recovery.

Mr Chauhan has been a member of ISAKOS (International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery & Orthopaedic Sports Medicine) for over a decade, reflecting his long standing commitment to advancing best practice in sports & knee surgery. He is a member of national professional bodies including the British Association for Surgery of the Knee.
He completed an MBA at Hertfordshire Business School, graduating with Distinction, & received the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Research. As Clinical Lead at Mid & South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, he led the transition from paper based to digital surgical consent, improving patient understanding, governance, & service efficiency.
