About Prof Ben Challacombe

Professor Ben Challacombe is a Consultant Urological Surgeon specializing in minimally invasive treatments for prostatic diseases. He practices at The Shard, part of HCA Healthcare UK, and The Prostate Centre. Professor Challacombe holds several key positions, including Guy’s & St Thomas’ MDM Urological Cancer and Clinical Robotics Lead, UK Robotic Surgery Mentor, and Robotic Fellowship Director. His training spans Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, The Royal Marsden Hospital, and the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia, where he was awarded the prestigious Rowan Nicks Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He has also served as the Chairman of the British Association of Urology (BAUS) Oncology Section and received the BAUS Golden Cystoscope award in 2019 for his contributions to British urology. Additionally, he is a lecturer and Trustee of The Urology Foundation Charity. In 2002, Professor Challacombe conducted the first randomized trial of telerobotics for his Master of Surgery thesis on robotic surgery and telemedicine. He has performed over 1,600 robotic radical prostatectomies and more than 1,400 robotic upper tract procedures, including 850 robotic partial nephrectomies. With 1,500 holmium laser prostatectomies (HoLEP) to his name, he is among the most experienced in the UK. He has also played a pivotal role in developing the robotic cystectomy and robotic partial nephrectomy programs at Guy’s Hospital, making him the highest volume surgeon for these procedures in the UK. Professor Challacombe's current research focuses on robotic surgery training, trans-perineal template biopsy techniques, active surveillance of low-risk prostate cancer, and the development of new robotic surgical platforms. He has served as an associate editor for the BJUI and has over 230 peer-reviewed publications. Additionally, he has authored three books and 25 book chapters, sharing his extensive knowledge in minimally invasive and robotic urological techniques.
