About

Dr Michael Quail is a highly experienced Consultant Cardiologist specialising in the care of adults living with congenital heart disease (ACHD). He holds an honorary consultant appointment at St Bartholomew's Hospital, where he runs a dedicated weekly ACHD outpatient clinic, and brings a unique depth of expertise through his subspecialty training in both advanced cardiac MRI and adult congenital cardiology. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) and Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (FRCPCH). He has served as Scientific Secretary of the British Congenital Cardiac Association.

Dr Quail is one of the UK's leading experts in cardiac MRI for adults with congenital heart disease — the gold-standard imaging tool for this patient group. He holds Level 3 (the highest level) of accreditation in congenital and paediatric cardiac MRI. This exceptional imaging expertise enables highly detailed, personalised assessment even in patients with the most anatomically complex congenital conditions.

Dr Quail completed his specialist training at the Royal Brompton Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, and St Bartholomew's Hospital, having ranked first in national recruitment for paediatric cardiology training in 2014. He is an Honorary Associate Professor at University College London, and was previously the UK's first Academic Clinical Fellow in paediatric cardiology — a reflection of his longstanding commitment to advancing the field.

A Fulbright Scholar at Yale University and British Heart Foundation Clinical Research Training Fellow, Dr Quail was awarded his PhD in cardiovascular imaging and physiology from UCL. He has won the Melvin-Judkins Young Investigator Award from the American Heart Association.

He holds a current BHF Intermediate Clinical Research Fellowship investigating why children develop hypertension following coarctation repair — one of the most clinically important long-term complications in the ACHD population — and is principal investigator on grants totalling over £1.5 million. His research spans Fontan circulation, coarctation, tetralogy of Fallot, pulmonary hypertension, and novel imaging biomarkers, and he has published extensively in leading journals. He has authored multiple chapters in the definitive textbook Diagnosis and Management of Adult Congenital Heart Disease (Elsevier) and contributes regularly to international conferences.

Dr Quail is passionate about providing expert, continuity-focused care to adults living with congenital heart disease, understanding the lifelong nature of their condition and placing patients and their families at the heart of every clinical decision.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
