About

Mr. Michael Hughes is a Consultant General and Hepatobiliary (HPB) Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, with a focus on abdominal pain, hernia and gallbladder surgery, as well as minimally invasive liver and pancreas surgery. He graduated from the University of Aberdeen and completed his training in Edinburgh and South East Scotland. In addition to his clinical role, Mr. Hughes also has a fellowship in minimally invasive liver and pancreas surgery, which he pursued in Oslo before returning to Edinburgh to take up his consultant post in 2020.

Mr. Hughes serves as an army consultant surgeon and is actively involved in military trauma surgery. He plays a key role in the training and supervision of both civilian and military surgeons, and is the Quality Improvement lead for secondary healthcare within the military medical services.

During his training, Mr. Hughes completed a doctoral thesis (MD) and has published extensively on enhanced recovery after surgery. This remains a significant area of interest for him, and he leads the enhanced recovery programme for the hepatobiliary unit at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He also acts as a reviewer for international surgical journals and is an advisor for the development of the national gallstone disease pathway for Scotland.

Mr. Hughes is dedicated to providing safe, effective, and evidence-based surgical care, and takes pride in delivering high-quality, compassionate service to his patients.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”

— Mr Michael Hughes
