Mr Maciej Mateusz Pawlak is a Consultant General Surgeon specialising in abdominal wall surgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery and complex hernia repair. He currently leads the Department for Abdominal Wall Surgery at Golden Jubilee National Hospital, where he is involved in the management of complex abdominal wall and hernia conditions.
Mr Pawlak graduated from the Medical University of Gdańsk, where he also completed specialist training in general surgery and later earned a PhD in Medicine. His doctoral research focused on biomechanical forces affecting implants anchored to the anterior abdominal wall. He subsequently undertook advanced fellowship training in upper gastrointestinal and complex abdominal wall surgery at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
His international training includes experience at several specialist centres, including the Lichtenstein Amid Hernia Clinic at UCLA, Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío and Hanse Chirurgie Clinic. Prior to his current role, he contributed to the development and leadership of the North Devon Comprehensive Hernia Centre.
Mr Pawlak has expertise in robotic-assisted abdominal wall reconstruction, minimally invasive hernia surgery, inguinal hernia repair and complex abdominal wall reconstruction. He is actively involved in the development of international surgical guidelines through organisations including the European Hernia Society and HerniaSurge.
Alongside his clinical work, he contributes extensively to surgical education, research and international training programmes, with a focus on improving outcomes in hernia and abdominal wall surgery.
