Dr Jonathon Parkinson is a highly experienced neurosurgeon with specialist expertise in brain and spinal tumours, skull base surgery, and the full spectrum of spinal surgery, including minimally invasive (keyhole) techniques. Dr Parkinson completed his medical degree at the University of Sydney in 1998 and undertook advanced neurosurgical training at leading Sydney hospitals, including Royal North Shore and Prince of Wales Hospitals. During this period, he completed a PhD at the Kolling Institute of Medical Research, specialising in the molecular biology of brain tumours. He further refined his surgical expertise through a prestigious fellowship at the University of Calgary Spine Program, focusing on minimally invasive spine surgery and the management of degenerative and metastatic spinal disease.
Dr Parkinson’s surgical practice encompasses advanced brain tumour surgery, complex skull base procedures, and minimally invasive spinal surgery for conditions such as sciatica, radiculopathy, and spinal stenosis. Alongside his clinical work, he remains actively involved in research into brain tumour biology and clinical management. He is Co-Chair of the NSW Oncology Group (Neuro-oncology) and a member of the management committee of the Australasian Neuro-oncology Group (COGNO).
Committed to education and training, Dr Parkinson recently concluded a stint of 9 years as the Surgical Supervisor of Training in Neurosurgery at Royal North Shore and North Shore Hospitals. He is also a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Northern Clinical School, University of Sydney, and the Postgraduate Research and Training Lead at the Surgical Education, Research, and Training (SERT) Institute, where he plays a key role in mentoring the next generation of neurosurgeons.
