About Ms Johanna Thomas
Ms Johanna Thomas is a Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, with specialist expertise in paediatric urology, kidney and bladder stone disease, and lower urinary tract conditions. She treats a wide range of childhood urological issues, including undescended testes, hernias, incontinence, and urinary tract infections. She is also highly experienced in minimally invasive surgery for kidney and ureteric stones, performing over 100 ureteroscopies annually. Her training includes a BAUS-accredited course in percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in Sri Lanka, and she has a strong interest in the role of diet in stone formation. Ms Thomas graduated with distinction from Imperial College Medical School in 2005, earning the highest mark in her surgical exam and receiving the Glazer Prize for Surgery. She also holds a BSc in Medical Sciences. Her surgical training took place across several centres in southern England, including a year at Great Ormond Street Hospital specialising in paediatric urology. Nationally and internationally recognised for her research, Ms Thomas has published and presented on topics such as undescended testicles, paediatric bladder stones, and male epispadias outcomes. In 2018, she became the first woman appointed as a Consultant in the Royal Berkshire Hospital’s Urology department. She lives in Reading with her husband and two daughters.
