About

Dr Joan Brunton is an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with over twenty years of dedicated experience in the mental health field. Based at Schoen Clinic Chelsea, she specialises in assessing and treating a wide spectrum of mental health conditions, with a particular focus on eating disorders.

Dr Brunton completed her medical degree at the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in 1994. She further enriched her understanding of human behaviour and wellbeing by obtaining an intercalated BSc in Psychology from University College London.

Commencing her Psychiatry training in 1996, Dr Brunton delved into the realm of Eating Disorders during an SHO post under Professor Lacey at Atkinson Morley’s Hospital in 1998. Her journey continued with advanced training as a lecturer in Eating Disorders at St George’s University of London.

Since 2005, Dr Brunton has served as a Consultant Adult Psychiatrist, contributing significantly to both Community and Inpatient Eating Disorder Services. Notably, she played a pivotal role in developing the Community Eating Disorders Service and Day Hospital at South West London and St George’s Mental Health Trust.

With a comprehensive approach to mental health care, Dr Brunton extends her expertise beyond eating disorders to address anxiety, relationship issues, and mild to moderate depression in adult patients. She has a keen interest in women’s health, particularly infertility and menopause-related concerns.

Dr Brunton adopts a therapeutic approach to mental health, incorporating various therapeutic models such as CBT, MANTRA, family carer skills, and MBT alongside medication when necessary. She believes in a holistic approach, seamlessly integrating psychological and physical interventions to optimise individual wellbeing.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
