About
Associate Professor Jeremy Grummet is an accomplished academic urologist wirth Monash University who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. In addition to his private practice, he is also the Director of Urology at the Alfred Hospital (Bayside Health).
One of his significant contributions to the field of urology is the development and promotion of transperineal biopsy as a safer alternative to the traditional transrectal biopsy for prostate cancer diagnosis. This technique is now recommended as the standard of care in official clinical guidelines and is the most commonly used prostate biopsy method in Australia. A/Prof Grummet is a prominent figure in the global TREXIT movement, which aimed to eliminate the practice of transrectal biopsy by the end of 2022.
He is also the co-founder of MRI PRO, an innovative online training program designed to enhance the accuracy and reporting standards of prostate MRI worldwide. MRI PRO has successfully advanced its mission, with radiologists and urologists from over 90 countries viewing its prostate MRI cases and webinar videos.
A/Prof Grummet holds the distinction of being the first non-European Member of the European Association of Urology (EAU) Prostate Cancer Guidelines Panel. These guidelines are widely used in Europe and endorsed globally, including by the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ).
He has pioneered the new treatment of focal therapy for prostate cancer in Australia and serves as a Primary Investigator for both the LIBERATE and FIREFLY prospective clinical registries, which use focal therapy for single-focus intermediate-risk localised prostate cancer. This research, conducted in Australia, leverages accurate imaging to target treatment precisely, minimising side effects. Similar targeted treatment approaches have become the standard of care for other solid organ cancers like breast cancer.
Associate Professor Grummet currently focuses his research efforts toward focal therapy and prostate cancer diagnostics, including MRI and biopsy. He supervises PhD and Master of Surgery researchers in this field, exploring topics such as the risk of biopsy sepsis, diagnostic accuracy, the role of MRI-targeted biopsy, and PSMA PET scanning.
