About

Mr James Barnes is a Consultant General Surgeon with specialist expertise in renal transplantation, complex vascular access for dialysis, and parathyroid surgery. He consults privately at The Harborne Hospital and The Priory Hospital, Birmingham, and holds an NHS post at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Mr Barnes earned his BSc from the University of Nottingham in 2003 and graduated in medicine from Warwick Medical School in 2007. He completed surgical training in the West Midlands before undertaking a three-year Clinical Research Fellowship at the Oxford Transplant Centre, gaining advanced training in transplantation. His doctoral research, awarded a DPhil by the University of Oxford in 2020, focused on graft surveillance following pancreas transplantation.

His clinical interests include complex parathyroid surgery, particularly reoperative cases, renal hyperparathyroidism, and MEN-associated disease, living donor transplantation (including laparoscopic donor nephrectomy), non-donor nephrectomy for conditions such as polycystic kidneys, and advanced vascular access surgery for dialysis patients.

A Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Mr Barnes is also a member of the British Transplantation Society, the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons, and the Vascular Access Society of Britain and Ireland. He remains active in research, teaching, and the development of surgical training nationally.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
