About

Dr Gabriella Captur is a Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and Associate Professor at University College London (UCL), specialising in inherited heart conditions and advanced cardiac imaging. At the Royal Free Hospital, she leads the Inherited Cardiac Conditions (Cardiomyopathy) Service, caring for patients with genetic and acquired heart muscle diseases. At UCL, she directs the Cardiometabolic Research Department within the Lifelong Health and Ageing Unit, where her work focuses on cardiovascular health in ageing and large population studies.

Dr Captur is internationally recognised for her expertise in cardiomyopathies, genetic heart disease, heart failure and cardiovascular prevention. She completed her cardiology and multi-modality imaging training at leading London centres including the Heart Hospital and Barts Heart Centre, and undertook a cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) research fellowship at the US National Institutes of Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. She holds expert-level accreditation in CMR, echocardiography, including adult congenital and transoesophageal echocardiography, and cardiac CT. She completed her PhD at UCL, achieved an MSc in Cardiology with Distinction, and is a Fellow of both the European Society of Cardiology and the Royal College of Physicians.

Dr Captur has authored over 135 peer-reviewed publications and leads an active research team at UCL. She has received more than 30 national and international awards and grants, including prestigious fellowships from the NIHR, EACVI and the British Heart Foundation, as well as recognition from the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. She developed widely adopted CMR calibration tools and invented a patented electrocardiographic imaging vest designed to improve risk assessment for sudden cardiac death.

As UK National Taskforce Lead for Cardiomyopathy with the British Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, Dr Captur plays a leading role in advancing innovation in cardiac care. She is a frequent invited speaker at international conferences and remains an active member of major professional societies including the ESC, AHA, SCMR, BSCMR, EACVI and the Royal College of Physicians. She is the Associate Editor for the Journal of CMR.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
