He trained in respiratory medicine at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth and the Repatriation General Hospital in Adelaide. During this time, he developed subspecialist expertise in sleep medicine and completed a PhD at Flinders University, focusing on non-invasive ventilatory support (BiPAP) in patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and sleep-related breathing disorders.
Dr O’Donoghue has been based in Melbourne since 2001, working at Austin Health and Warringal Private Hospital. His clinical practice encompasses all areas of respiratory medicine, including the assessment and management of lung disease and sleep disorders, as well as involvement in lung cancer diagnosis and treatment.
He has an active academic and research profile, with over 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He has been awarded National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) grants and contributes to medical education as a lecturer. He has also served on national committees related to respiratory and sleep medicine, with a focus on specialist training and laboratory accreditation.
