About
He runs highly specialised endocrine clinics, including Regional Joint Pituitary and endocrine-reproductive disorder services. His clinical expertise covers pituitary disorders such as acromegaly, Cushing’s disease, prolactin disorders, diabetes insipidus and growth hormone deficiency; thyroid, adrenal and parathyroid conditions (including calcium disorders); osteoporosis; and hormone-related fatigue linked to thyroid, adrenal and metabolic causes. Dr Sharma also has particular expertise in endocrine-reproductive health, including infertility, PCOS, hypogonadism, erectile dysfunction, testosterone deficiency and testosterone replacement therapy, as well as women’s health concerns such as hormone-related menstrual disorders, the peri-menopausal transition and post-menopausal care with hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
In diabetes care, Dr Sharma specialises in poorly controlled and complex diabetes, diabetic kidney disease, diabetic foot disease and neuropathy. He has a strong focus on dietary and weight-related challenges, weight management through lifestyle and medication, and the use of modern diabetes technologies and monitoring devices.
Dr Sharma has previously served as a Visiting Professor at Hope University and held several senior educational roles, including RCP College Tutor at Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Specialty Trainee Teaching Lead for Diabetes and Endocrinology at the Mersey Deanery, and Lead for Diabetes Education at the Royal Liverpool Academy. He is also the patron of the Diabetes Diploma and Fellowship Programme through Medvarsity and a co-founder of Medexcell Education, which delivers leadership training, teaching skills development and courses in critical appraisal to promote evidence-based medicine.
As Clinical Director for the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Dr Sharma has led multiple transformational initiatives to improve service efficiency, patient outcomes and staff satisfaction. These include the introduction of innovative twice-daily ward rounds, the Diabetes Review and Discharge Support (DRDS) model to reduce hospital stay and readmissions, and the development of an in-house outpatient review hub with nurse-led follow-up clinics to significantly reduce waiting times. He is also an active member of the Liverpool Diabetes Partnership, contributing to the ongoing development and delivery of high-quality diabetes services.
“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
